The promise of overflow is a consistent theme in Scripture, and Deuteronomy 28:1–11 highlights
the blessings that come when God’s people harken diligently to His voice. To harken diligently is
not merely to hear but to listen attentively, with a heart willing to obey and apply God’s word in
daily living. It is a posture of reverence where the Word of God is the guidepost of our lives,
shaping our decisions, actions, and character. Jesus Himself reinforced this principle in Matthew
7:24–27, comparing anyone who hears His words and obey them to a wise builder whose house
stood firm against storms. Overflowing in life is therefore not accidental, it is the outcome of
hearing, believing, and doing God’s Word with full commitment.
True diligence requires consistency in obedience. Luke 11:28 emphasizes, “Blessed are they that
hear the word of God and keep it.” Blessing is not found in selective obedience or partial
surrender. James 2:10 reminds us that whoever stumbles at one point of the law is guilty of all,
warning us against the danger of picking and choosing which instructions to follow. When we
choose convenience over obedience, we disqualify ourselves from the overflow God has
promised. As 1 Corinthians 10:12 cautions, “Let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.”
This sober reminder calls us to humility and vigilance, knowing that diligence requires careful
attention to every word of the Lord.
The danger of neglecting diligent obedience is also illustrated in Scripture. Galatians 5:4 warns
that falling away from grace is possible when we cease to remain anchored in Christ. Judges
16:20 tells the sobering story of Samson, who after repeated disobedience, discovered too late
that the Lord had departed from him. Similarly, Jesus warns in Matthew 7:13–14 that the way to
life is narrow and few find it. Overflow cannot come to the careless or the complacent, it is
reserved for those who earnestly and consistently harken to God’s voice, walking in His ways
even when it is challenging.
Yet, the blessings of diligent obedience are immense. Deuteronomy 28:2 declares, “And all these
blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt harken diligently unto the voice of
the Lord thy God.” When we align ourselves fully with His will, overflow is not something we
chase; it overtakes us. Our lives become vessels of abundance in every area, spiritual, physical,
financial, and relational. But the key is determination. We must resolve in our hearts, like Joshua,
that “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord”, Joshua 24:15. Without determination,
distractions and trials will cause us to drift, but with steadfastness, we can remain rooted in
Christ, the true Vine.
Overflow also manifests in our words and actions. As vessels of God’s abundance, our speech
must be seasoned with grace, building up rather than tearing down. Proverbs teaches that life and
death are in the power of the tongue, and as people of overflow, our words must reflect the life of
Christ in us. When we harken diligently, even our conversations carry the fragrance of heaven,
encouraging others to walk in faith. Our testimony, attitudes, and interactions become channels
through which God’s overflow touches the lives of those around us.
The secret to sustaining this life of abundance is to keep our focus on Christ alone. Hebrews calls
Him the Author and Finisher of our faith, and only by remaining connected to Him can we
continue to overflow. James 1:22 exhorts us not to be hearers only but doers of the Word, for it is
in the doing that the Word transforms us. Selective obedience dries up the flow, but full
submission keeps the river of God’s blessings unceasing. To harken diligently is to surrender
fully, obeying all that the Lord commands, with trust that His Word leads to life.
In conclusion, harkening diligently to God’s words is a spiritual principle that brings divine
blessings into every area of life. It is not enough to hear God’s Word; we must observe to do it
with diligence and determination. Partial obedience will always hinder the flow, but full
submission releases the blessings promised in Deuteronomy 28:1-14. As vessels of overflow, our
words, actions, and focus must remain aligned with Christ, the true Vine. If we keep our ears
open to His voice and our hearts committed to His will, we will experience the abundant life
Jesus promised, a life where blessings do not just come but overtake us.
