Deep fellowship with the Lord is a beautiful and powerful pursuit for every believer. It is not
merely about attending church services or reading scripture from time to time—it is about
consistently hearing from God and walking closely with Him. Revelation 21:1–4 paints a
glorious picture of God’s eternal dwelling with His people. In the same way that God desires to
be with us forever, He also desires to be close to us now, speaking to us, guiding us, and
revealing His heart to us. As we grow in our walk with Him, we begin to understand that He is
not silent; He is a speaking God who wants us to hear and know His voice. Experiencing deep
fellowship with God requires learning to recognize and respond to the many ways He speaks.
God is a big God, full of wonders and miracles. He does not hide Himself from His children.
Throughout the Bible, He made Himself known to individuals like Moses, Samuel, and Jesus
through audible voice (1 Samuel 3, Exodus 3, Matthew 3:17). These instances show that God
can and still does speak audibly. While this may not be the most common way He speaks
today, it reminds us that God is personal and intentional. Just as He did with these great men of
faith, God wants to speak directly into our lives and situations. We must be spiritually sensitive
and attentive to hear when He chooses to speak this way.
Another primary way God speaks is through His Word. Romans 10:4 teaches us that Christ is
the culmination of the law, and John 1:1 reminds us that “In the beginning was the Word, and
the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The Word of God is not just a book—it is
alive, powerful, and a direct way God reveals Himself to us. As we meditate on scripture, we
begin to hear His voice through the pages. Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my
feet and a light to my path.” The more we let the Word of God dwell richly in us (Psalm 1:2),
the clearer His voice becomes in our daily lives.
The Holy Spirit is also a key way God speaks to His people. 1 Corinthians 3:16 tells us that the
Spirit of God dwells in us, and John 14:26 reveals that the Holy Spirit teaches us all things and
reminds us of what Jesus has said. Sometimes, the Spirit speaks in a still, small voice, as seen
in 1 Kings 19:12. This gentle prompting or inner witness guides us in truth and discernment.
According to 2 Timothy 3:16–17, the Spirit-inspired scriptures equip us for every good work.
Developing a relationship with the Holy Spirit through prayer, worship, and obedience is
crucial for anyone who desires to hear God regularly and deeply.
God also speaks through circumstances and people. Romans 8:28 tells us that “all things work
together for good to them that love God.” Sometimes, the things happening around us—delays,
opportunities, challenges—are God’s way of directing our steps. However, many people miss
God’s voice in these moments because they do not pause to reflect or inquire of Him.
Furthermore, God speaks through other believers. Moses received wise counsel from Jethro,
his father-in-law (Exodus 18), and many of us today are guided through sermons, Christian
mentors, or godly friends. As Amos 3:7 says, “Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he
revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.”
The benefits of hearing from God are endless. First, it brings direction—you no longer wander
in confusion or go around in circles. Second, it produces growth; we become more like Christ
in thought and action. Third, it leads to fulfillment in life (Psalm 16:11), as we align with our
God-given purpose. Most importantly, it creates intimacy with God (James 4:8). When we
draw near to Him, He draws near to us. This fellowship becomes our source of strength, peace,
and joy in all seasons of life.
To cultivate this kind of relationship, we must be intentional. Let the Word of God dwell in you
(Psalm 119:11, Joshua 1:7–9). Study to show yourself approved (2 Timothy 2:15). Develop a
consistent prayer life because prayer is not just speaking to God; it is also listening (Hebrews
11:6). Fast and set aside worldly distractions to sharpen your spirit. Finally, obey His
voice—John 14:15 says, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” When you live in
obedience, He will be closer to you than ever (Proverbs 8:17). In conclusion, deep fellowship
with the Lord begins with hearing from Him, and hearing from Him transforms everything.
