God Will Hear Your Cry – Psalm 40:1

In moments of pain, struggle, or uncertainty, many turn to God with a cry from the depths
of their hearts. Psalm 40:1 says, “I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me,
and heard my cry.” This verse reminds us that God hears the sincere cries of His people.
But this promise is not for everyone indiscriminately; it is for those who are His
children—those who walk with Him, love Him, and strive to live righteously. To be heard
by God is a privilege that flows from relationship. And more than just waiting passively, we
can even provoke God to respond now by approaching Him with sincerity, faith, and a heart
fully surrendered to His will.

Being a child of God is the starting point. It’s not enough to merely acknowledge God’s
existence; we must belong to Him. The Bible teaches that to be righteous is to be aligned
with God’s will. Psalm 34:17-19 says, “The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and
delivereth them out of all their troubles. The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken
heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit…” This doesn’t mean that the righteous
won’t suffer—on the contrary, they often do. But the promise is that God will deliver them
out of them all. Deliverance may not be immediate, but God’s faithfulness never fails.

To be righteous means to have a heart that seeks after God. Righteousness is not about
perfection; it’s about the direction of your life. A righteous person is someone whose heart
is set on the Lord, someone who chooses to do what is right even when it’s hard. This takes
effort. In a world filled with compromise, the righteous must consciously strive to obey
God. Righteousness does not happen by accident; it requires intention. It is a daily decision
to reject sin and follow God’s truth, even when no one else is watching.

A truly righteous person is also one who yields to the Holy Spirit. God is close to those with
a contrite spirit—one that is humble, teachable, and tender before Him. When your heart is
conscious of the Spirit, you give Him room to work in your life. Righteousness grows when
we allow the Holy Spirit to lead us, guide us, and correct us. This requires surrender,
humility, and a willingness to be changed. God delights in those who allow His Spirit to
have full control.

James 1:19 gives us wise instruction for righteous living: “Wherefore, my beloved brethren,
let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.” In times of frustration or
conflict, we must resist the urge to react emotionally. Instead, we are called to be slow to
speak and slow to anger. Righteousness is often tested in how we respond under pressure.
God hears our cries, but He also desires that we mature spiritually. When we pause to listen
and consider our words, we reflect the character of Christ.

Righteousness must also be evident in our relationships. For husbands, 1 Peter 3:7 says,
“Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the
wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your
prayers be not hindered.” This reveals a deep truth—our treatment of others, especially
those closest to us, affects our prayer life. A man who honors his wife honors God, and
God, in turn, hears his cry. True righteousness is not just about how we behave in church,
but how we live at home.

Finally, Romans 12:17-21 gives a powerful picture of righteous behavior: “Recompense to
no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much
as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves…
Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink… Be not overcome of
evil, but overcome evil with good.” God calls us to respond to injustice with goodness, to
trust Him for justice, and to live in peace. When we walk in this kind of righteousness, our
cries reach heaven. God hears. God responds. And God delivers.
